Our senses! Thanks to them, our brains are constantly flooded with information about the world around us. What may surprise you is that we're not all wired the same way, and some of us are unable to understand exactly what we're sensing. People with sensory processing disorder (SPD), a newly identified neurological condition, as well as those with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are frequently misunderstood by others when they over- or under-react to sounds, sights, smells, tastes, touch, movement, balance, and feelings within their bodies.
In this guide, mental health counselor, SPD community advocate, and sensory adult Rachel S. Schneider MA MHC helps us to make sense of sensory issues. Whether you're someone with sensory issues, a loved one supporting a sensory person, a professional, or someone that is curious about unusual and complex sensory experiences, this guide will answer your questions about life with sensory processing differences.
Making Sense A Guide to Sensory Issues (Audible Audio Edition) Rachel Schneider Francie Wyck Future Horizons Books
Its easy to understand, its easy to read, its NOT too science-y. I felt I had a better understanding of what I was dealing with and that I wasn't crazy!!Phew! What a relief! She's an SPD diagnosed as an adult ( just like me).
I bought this to replace the one that my therapists loaned me. I have read several books on SPD. I read this twice in two days. First time was to read it through but as I read it, it was as if she wrote the book about me, I got emotional while reading because someone FINALLY "got" me and I couldn't believe it! Second time was for highlighting/ marking the places that described me (which was a great deal of the book) so that I can take it to my therapist and discuss the hundreds of markings I made.
This book had changed everything for me. I love how she just talks like she's talking to you. She doesn't drown you in language that Drs use when talking shop use. I could go on about this book. Best book! I loved it!

Making Sense A Guide to Sensory Issues (Audible Audio Edition) Rachel Schneider Francie Wyck Future Horizons Books Reviews
In my most humble opinion, there is currently no book in existence that covers the topic of Sensory Processing Disorder more thoroughly than Making Sense by Rachel Schneider. This book is more than just a "guide to sensory issues" as the title describes - it is the pinnacle of everything and anything that is SPD. As a Mental Health Counselor, Rachel explains the wide variety of factors related to SPD in a comforting, educational, and often humorous way. Featuring delightful illustrations throughout the book, it's challenging - if not impossible - not to read through the entire book in one sitting. Those of us living with SPD might be tempted to chew a little on the book, but please, dear friends read first, chew later. Packed with the latest neurological research, tips, tools, and treatments, you may find yourself overwhelmed with your knowledge of sensory issues. The next day, go out and impress your neurotypical friends by sharing the existence of all eight senses - yes eight! Don't worry, Rachel explains it all. You're in good hands.
I am writing under my moms account. So you won't know this is but.. I was lucky enough to find Rachel on an online Facebook page. My child has sensory processing disorder and it led me to finding out that I have spd as well. I have been so greatful to follow Rachel's work online for the past two or three years. Rachel uses her personal experences to share with us her struggles and her acomploshments. I value her advice as a person who has sensory issues and as a professional working in the field. Now, as far as my book reveiw. I can't get past chapter four. Everytime I read it I find more information. I find myself explained so many times. To me this is insane. I loved half my life being the person no one understood. If you have sensory procession disorder or have someone on your life who does, get this book. Rachel's insite is incredibly helpful. With this book you have what you need to start your journey into healing mentally and physically. So greatful for Rachel and this book.
Rachel Schneider, an adult who lives with SPD and is thriving, writes a must-read for parents of children with sensory processing disorder. Peppered with personal anecdotes and hard-earned insights, the author contributes analysis of sensory meltdowns and shutdowns that you won’t find anywhere else.
This is great news, parents! You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
First, Schneider carefully explains how sensations are normally processed in the human body, and then describes her personal experience of living with a disrupted sensory processing system. It’s hard!
If you’re a parent currently in the trenches with a child suffering regular hardships, Schneider’s easygoing, conversational tone offers an upbeat counterpoint. MAKING SENSE is a powerful antidote to parental stress because Schneider is so matter-of-fact about it all -- so forthcoming, and so generous in talking honestly about her own struggles.
Her heartbreaking description of suffering regular re-exposure to overwhelming environments as a young child, without being able to describe her anguish to her well-meaning, loving parents will, and should, influence how parents approach family life in all regards from limit setting to party planning.
MAKING SENSE will help parents understand that their sensory child is suffering a neurological crisis when challenging behaviors and emotional explosions erupt. It’s not ‘bad’ behavior that can be ‘extinguished,’ and parents are not a bad parents because their child is suffering. Not targeted exclusively to parents like PARENTING FROM the INSIDE OUT by D. Siegel, M.D. and M. Hartzell, nor offering a specific parenting strategy like LISTEN by P. Wipfler & T. Shore, this book does contribute a distinctly personal, optimistic view of a serious topic for families of children who suffer.
You’ll wish that Rachael Schneider lived next-door so you could laugh and cry with her about your challenging family life. MAKING SENSE is poignant, comforting, informative, and fun. It delivers an honest, vibrantly hopeful message for parents of sensory children.
Rachel clearly and simply explains the nature of sensory differences in children and adults. Well organized, well explained and revealing. As a fellow sufferer of Sensory Processing Disorder I was very impressed with the clarity of her writing. It was interesting to see what we shared (in SPD) and where we were different. This complex set of sensory issues is just now being addressed with research and testing. Studies at UCSF, for example, have clearly showed the brain miswiring common with this syndrome. The causes are less well understood but appear to be both genetic and environmental (premature delivery, stressed mother, alchohol, lead). Because the sensory failure can lead to either overly high response or overly low response it will take a while to fully understand these problems - but this book will help you understand why it matters and what you can do to help your child, spouse, patient, client, friend or coworker with SPD.
Its easy to understand, its easy to read, its NOT too science-y. I felt I had a better understanding of what I was dealing with and that I wasn't crazy!!
Phew! What a relief! She's an SPD diagnosed as an adult ( just like me).
